7 Ways to Educate Yourself During Election

As the November 2nd elections quickly approach, it is crucial that you take a critical look at the people who want your vote.  Listen closely to what they claim they are going to do for you and your community.   And, most importantly, do some research on what they have done.  This one single action will make a huge difference.  Following are ways to educate yourself about the candidates who want your votes.
1. Check out their websites
All candidates should have websites. Read through them thoroughly. Will you seriously vote for people who don't tell others what they plan to do if elected?  If they don't have a web site, that's a big red flag.  If the site looks like it was thrown up at the last minute, that's another red flag.  Take the time to do your homework and ask questions.  A little work now will save a lot of heartache later.
2. Read political blogs
These are great sources of information about candidates and issues.  Some bloggers give opinions; others give facts.  Either way, you cannot go wrong.  Political blogs will not only enhance your knowledge about candidates, they will increase your political education.  You will gain a wide variety of views from a multitude of sources.
3. Go to candidate forums
Forums are held at different locations throughout YOUR community. You will not only get the chance to hear what candidates have to say, you may get a chance to speak with them personally.  If some candidates never attend any forums in YOUR community, this is pretty much a sign of your relevance to them.  This is an indication of how much they care about you, your community, your issues and ultimately you vote.
4. Do politicians come to your community?
Even though politicians cannot be everywhere, keep in mind that they have a full term to check out your community.  Be leery of politicians you only see during election time, especially if they only come to your church and not to schools, community and civic events.
5. Seek the wisdom of elders
If you are not political savvy, speak to elders about past political campaigns.  As you know, history repeats itself, and the seniors have experienced many elections over the years.  Take time to seek their wisdom to get informed.
6. Hang out on social networking sites.
Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have replaced traditional media as reliable news sources.  Like political blogs, you will gain a lot of insight from a variety of sources which can help with your decision making.
7. WVON AM 1690
The personalities on WVON AM 1690 are very political savvy.  This is one of the best resources to learn about local and national candidates and their actions.  They are truly "the voice of the nation."
Ignorance is not bliss, especially when you are putting your life in someone else's hands - including politicians.  Be sure to pick at least one of the ways listed above to educate yourself about politicians seeking your vote.  Ultimately, your destiny is determined by your decision to vote or not to vote.

Online Education FAQs

Online education is a great way for working people to earn their degrees. You can study, take tests, and submit assignments any time during the day. This ensures that you have minimal disruption to your work commitments.
One of the most frequently asked questions surrounding online education is, "Do I need a really fast internet connection". Thankfully, the answer in most cases is no. Of course, this will vary slightly depending on the program and program materials.
If you are taking a class that has you submit assignments or take tests online, then they will typically want you to have something other than dial-up service, however. Some programs have timed tests, and dial-up service can cause your connection to time out before you are finished. The same goes with submitting a large assignment online. The larger the file, the longer it will take causing a dial up connection to possibly time out.
Also, if you are taking a class where the course materials include streaming videos or live lecture feeds, then you will need something other than dial up. These usually require the basic cable or DSL connection because dial up would be too slow to load these videos or would not load them at all.
The good news is that you do not need the super turbo internet connection in order to take online classes. Just ensure that your connection is reliable. Nothing can foul up your assignment or test worse than your internet connection going down. That would be akin to telling your professor that the dog ate your homework.

Free Education For International Students

Study abroad scholarship programs have been going on for quite sometime now in some parts of the world. Study abroad scholarship programs came up to help people who don't have money to study abroad. Most of these people don't even have enough money to fund their college studies or university studies in their home countries. But with free education now, most people can get quality education in the best countries of the world.
Recently, the countries that offer free education for international students are so few due to changes in policy. Free tuition schools for foreign students can only be found in some parts of Europe today. Sweden used to be the most popular country in Europe that is very much interested in free education for international students. The government of Sweden has been granting study abroad scholarship for international students for years now. People even started thinking that the free scholarship universities in Sweden would be there forever. It came as a shock to everyone when the news spread that starting from autumn semester 2011, there will not be study abroad scholarship universities for international students in Sweden. Though this policy was not immediately implemented. There was still opportunity for international students to apply for spring semester admission in Sweden on free tuition. After this semester, the policy takes immediate effect.
Though they have tried to help people to study free in their country, this recent policy is simply an eye opener. Other free tuition European countries might as well change their own policy.

What Do Budget Cuts in Education Mean to Your Family

The news just recently reported that there are a lot of budget cuts coming for the new school year. There are plans to lay off thousands of teachers, cancel summer school programs and after school programs and increase classroom size. Every parent that sends their child to public school should be very concerned. The U.S. in its current state is not up to par with education and making such drastic cuts can only be detrimental to future generations.
Once these budget cuts become effective parents should expect the drop out rate to climb. Programs that offer extra help to students who struggle in reading or math may soon be a thing of the past. This will put a lot of extra pressure on parents to compensate for the lack of support from the school system.
The US Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, is urging schools and parents to do all they can to prevent these changes from occurring. The loss of many of these programs will have serious effects on the quality of the education our children will receive.
What can parents do? Now more than ever, parents must be involved in making sure their child can read before they begin school. Since reading is the backbone of all other learning, parents need to be encouraged to invest some time in teaching their child to read before they even get to school. By sending a child to school that cannot read parents are gambling with their child's future.
Studies show that a child that is struggling to read in the third grade never catches up to their peers. With less funding and less remedial reading programs, parents are left with no choice. It boils down to this, if you want your child to do well in public school and get a good education, get prepared to be involved.
Teaching a child to read is not a hard or complicated task for parents. A child learns to read much easier in a one on one setting, such as would be provided in their home, with the guidance of a loving parent. Many programs are available to guide parents in teaching their child to read.
Parents should certainly invest in one of these programs and begin teaching their child to read beginning around age 4. With an investment of just 15 minutes a day a child can learn to read well before the age of 5. The United States is facing an economic crises, which will affect those dependent on the public school systems. Parents would be wise to prepare their child for success by assuring they can read well.
The best reading program available is called FUNdamentals. It is created by Action Reading. Children as young as 4 years old can begin learning to read with this program. The use of pictures to teach the sounds is pure genius. This program works so well that its creator used the program to teach a group of illiterate adults to read in a 2 week period of time and then they appeared on the Oprah show. They showed footage of them walking around town being able to read after they completed the program.

Medical News You and Your Family Can Finally Use

Welcome to Monthly Medical -News with Josh. Every month I am going to share with you some of the most talked about Medical stories and how they can affect you. For February some of the topics I will touch upon are- New Hope for Hepatitis C, Morning Sickness, Treatment for Cold Sores, and Hormone Vaccine against Breast Cancer. Enjoy Monthly Medical -News with Josh and don't forget the Doctor is always in!
1. Hormone Vaccine against Breast Cancer?
Researchers are pursuing a vaccine that could trick your body into thinking it's pregnant. It is well known that short-term exposure in early adulthood to the hormones of late pregnancy and to the hormones of lactation offers a life long risk reduction against breast cancer. Early in the 1700's, Dr. Bernardo Ramazzini described breast cancer as an "occupational disease of nuns". Even if we got rid of the "risk factors" for breast cancer, such as obesity, excess alcohol and hormone therapy, we would drop the incidence of breast cancer from 180,000 cases a year to 140,000. That's not much! What about genetics? In a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, in a study that looked at "SNP's", which are changes in genes that can cause disease, these changes only elevated the risk by 1.5 fold, which is truly not much, as compared to those without single gene mutations. What is it about pregnancy that decreases risk? No one really knows, but the bet is against it being estrogen and progesterone's.
2. Wounds that Won't Heal: WARNING
Poorly healing wounds are a major problem, and it's often seen in diabetics and people with poor circulation. Negative Pressure devices have been used to aid in the healing of these chronic wounds. Now, the FDA has issued a warning AGAINST these devices. Deaths have been reported, and have been associated with bleeding, infection and other problems. Negative pressure is appropriate for the right type of wound, however. Some of the problems may have arisen because most wound dressings are changed every day, but negative pressure bandages are not. These are the wounds in which Negative Pressure Devices are NOT appropriate:
1. Exposed nerves, or exposed vessels
2. Untreated infections of the bone [osteomyelitis]
3. Dead tissue present
4. Fistulas
5. Wound Infections
3. Morning Sickness Alert:
Don't take Nzu, also sold under the names of Calabash clay, Calabar stone, Mabele, Argile, and La Craie. These are sold in health food stores for morning sickness, and have been found to contain high levels of Arsenic and Lead. My Advice: Acupuncture and Ginger.
The Long QT syndrome:
This is a genetic disease that seems to occur more commonly, maybe due to better patient education about it. The story is "a young athlete that died while training." The family is devastated and lives are ruined. The truth is that we can screen for this. This disease affects the potassium or sodium channels in the heart. These patients may develop symptoms of fainting, tachycardia and eventually sudden death. In general, in addition to the EKG on the patient, we believe it is important to screen the first degree relatives as well, as this is a genetic disease. A "QTc" longer than 450 msec in men and 470 msec in women is considered worthy of more investigation. It is caused by 12 separate genes. WE call these "LQT 1-12". The "causative mutation" can be seen in 70% of high-probability cases...not "100%"...so a negative gene test at this point in time does not rule out Long QT syndrome. The arrhythmia, or abnormal heart beat, is typically brought out by swimming, exercise and emotions. Those with a mutation of LQT1 are the highest risk for exercise or emotion-induced rhythm problems, and a group of medications called Beta Blockers are used to treat it. Those with mutations in LQT3 are at a higher risk of getting an arrhythmia when they are at rest or sleeping. In addition to drug therapy, certain drugs must be avoided and these can be see.
4.New Hope for Hepatitis C?
No vaccine. Not yet. But at least there is some drug therapy. Telaprevir [VX 950: Johnson and Johnson] is a protease inhibitor, something that emerged as a result of HIV research. When it is added to the standard drug therapy for Hepatitis C, it leads to a sustained Virological response [less virus] in those who previously failed drug therapy. This study looked at those with HCV 1 and was called the "PROVE3" study. Another weapon in the war against Hep C has been added!
Acne: Which is Better?
Adapalene 0.1% gel or BenzaClin? In a recent study, BenzaClin won. 43% vs. a 20% response. Wow....we have been using this for years already. Keep in mind that Adapalene is a retinoid and may prevent you from having other aesthetic procedures performed!
5.New Treatment for Cold Sores?
Combining a 5% acyclovir cream, with a steroid cream can prevent recurrent herpes ulcers. This product was recently approved, but not yet named. This product, however, seems to prevent cold sore development and would be the first topical to do so.

Stock Trading Education

Thanks to low interest rates, the "idea" of stock trading has become more popular by the day. Why settle for a lowly 1% return when you could easily get 5-10% trading stocks?
I emphasize "idea" because, while a lot of people have thought about entering the market, only a few seem to take action. Be it the fear of losing money or the unknown, people just cannot seem to muster up the courage to jump into the markets.
There are really only 4 steps to start trading stocks:
  1. First, you must sign up for an online stock brokerage.
  2. Second, you must fund your account.
  3. Third, research potential stocks to trade.
  4. Finally, make a stock trade and hope for the best.

Before you start making trades you must have a trading strategy:
  • How much are you looking to make?
  • What is your time frame?
  • How much money do you have to play with?
  • Do you have expertise on a sector (i.e. Health, Energy, Materials).

There are a couple things to keep in mind when researching for stocks:
  • Does this stock have enough room to move within your time frame?
  • Does it have enough volatility or growth to meet the returns you want?
  • Is there any potential looming bad news that could cripple this stock?
  • What should ultimately drive the stock price higher?
Overall, investing can be as simplified or complicated as you make it; however, simple stock trading education can help improve your trading and returns. Research stock picks, see what works, what does not, and why, and track what the successful traders are doing. Eventually you will find the trading strategy that works best for you.

Programs and Education Benefits For Navy Spouses

While military spouses aren't covered by the same tuition assistance benefits to the same degree as their active duty service members, the funds available through education programs for spouses and family members sure are helpful in defraying the costs associated with earning a college or vocational degree.
Here are some of the assistance programs and opportunities offered to Navy spouses:
SOCNAV, the Service Members Opportunity Colleges degree program, consists of colleges that offer degree programs on, or accessible to installations worldwide. SOCNAV guarantees that adult family members can continue to work towards attaining their degrees, even if they experience frequent Navy transfers. Distance learning, which requires no classroom residency, is another option available under this program.
The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) offers the Spouse Tuition Aid Program to spouses whose service members are on active duty and stationed overseas. The spouse may be a full or part-time student studying towards a vocational certificate or college degree. At the undergraduate level, a maximum of $300 per semester and $1500 per year is authorized, whereas the total allowed for pursuing a graduate degree is $350 per semester and $1750 annually.
Spouses of active duty members can apply for the Vice Admiral E.P. Travers Scholarship and Loan Program as long as he or she is a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited academic institution. Here is a brief description:
- 1000 grants at $2000 each are awarded each academic year.
- Applicants are also evaluated for an interest-free student of up to $3000.
- Repayment of the loan begins within 30 days of award and must be repaid by allotment within two years.
- The application deadline is March 1st of each year.
- Applications received after the deadline will not be considered for the scholarship; however, they will be evaluated for loan purposes.
There is more good news for military spouses - A special provision of the Post-9/11 GI Bill offers education benefits for the spouses and children of service members. The new law gives the Department of Defense authorization to allow those who have served a minimum of six years in the Armed Forces, and who agree to serve at least four more, to transfer their unused GI Bill entitlement to their spouse. Also, when a service member reaches their 10-year anniversary, they have the option of transferring the benefit to their spouse or any of their dependents.

Government Sets Up Aid For Education

If you are a single mother and are struggling to make ends meet, you know that you could do much better if you had a college education. I'm sure at some point this thought has either entered your mind or has actually been spoken to you by someone you know. Many times people don't have the money to go back to school, thus it leaves you feeling like you're stuck in a situation you may not be able to come out of.
There are countless reasons why many women never finished their education after they graduated from high school. Unfortunately, a very common reason is due to the family not having the financial ability to send their children to school. Many times family members had to immediately go to work after finishing high school just to support the family itself.
Other times women may have decided that they would like to start a family and then go and finish college later. The truth of the matter is we all know that once you have children what you really want to do is not always possible. Keeping up with the expense of children can be quite exhausting as well as financially straining.
The good news is that Pres. Obama has created a scholarship for mothers program that gives single mothers financial aid up to the amount of $10,000 to return to school. Understand that this is money that you never have to pay back like a loan. Obama himself has said that he wants all women to return to school and finish their education. They are now making it possible through the financial aid the government has set up.
Don't waste a lot of time thinking about it however because the money will not last forever. If you are serious about putting yourself and your family in a better situation, then you should act quickly.
I have found A great resource for scholarships for moms [http://www.scholarshipsformomsnow.info] that will help you get started. Don't just settle for one either as there are many you can apply for.
